As folklore would have it, the Candy Cane originated in Cologne in the late 1600's. Legend says a choirmaster had created then white sugar sticks for the Children at church so they did not disrupt the Christmas choirs.
Because of the shepherds in the Nativity story, the choirmaster bent the candy sticks into canes to represent the shepherd's crook. The cane-shaped candy sticks became a tradition at the church. Their popularity eventually spread to other areas throughout Europe.
In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant whose name was August Imgard of Wooster, Ohio, decorated a small blue spruce with paper ornaments and candy canes. It wasn't until the turn of the century that the red and white stripes and peppermint flavours became the norm.
